PRESERVE WINDHAM
REJECT UNPLANNED GROWTH!
· Most local towns have accelerated Commercial Development with the intent to
lower taxes, only to have their TAXES INCREASE.
· The Village Center District was approved years ago. If we need commercial development so
desperately, why hasn’t that parcel been built out? 20 to 30 NEW BUSINESSES are slated for that
land. That should be enough for the size of our town for the foreseeable future.
· The current economy is not conducive to new business growth. Let’s fill the ten or more vacancies on Rt. 111 and Lowell Rd. before we look for new areas to
develop.
· Specific zoning changes for CLARKE FARM NORTH and WALL ST. have been
voted against by more than SIXTY PERCENT of the voting populous in both of the
last two years. OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES DON’T APPEAR TO BE PAYING ATTENTION
TO THE POPULAR VOTE. These same
proposals continue to appear on the ballot year after year.
· A presentation in front of the Windham Economic Development Committee
portrayed the value of CLARKE FARM NORTH to be $10 Million if it is
residentially developed and $34 MILLION if it is commercially developed:
Is this driven by NEED
or GREED?
Many of us have moved into the
Windham community because of its charm and convenient location. We expect that
its charm will continue to attract other residents that will be proud to call
Windham their home. As the population
increases, new essential businesses and services are a vital part of any
community’s continued vitality. Responsible growth that is for the benefit of
all should be a welcome event for all concerned citizens. It is important, however, that close
oversight be paid to the nature and timing of development so it does not
diminish the charm and appeal of our town.
Unchecked growth could easily diminish the appeal of our town and
establish a main thoroughfare through the center of our town resembling Rt. 28
in Salem or Rt.102 in Londonderry. These
two areas are convenient places to shop, but not consistent with the look and
feel that we would like to retain in Windham.
